AAH is designed to provide high-quality secondary medical care to animals in need who come to us through our internal partners (our own ASPCA adoption center, kitten nursery, and community advocate team) and external partners (NYPD and other NYC organizations). Additionally, AAH provides high-quality emergency practical medical care to local public clients who can’t otherwise afford it. We are staffed by one full time board-certified internist, a full time board-certified surgeon, a doctor whose practice is limited to small animal internal medicine, 13 generalists, 6 veterinary interns, a part time board-certified cardiologist, part time board-certified surgeon, and part time board-certified radiologist. Our ICU provides 24-hour care with a nursing staff of licensed veterinary technicians. AAH has advanced endoscopic, ultrasound and echocardiographic capabilities, digital radiography, dental radiography, orthopedic and soft-tissue surgical capability, i-STAT in-house blood chemistry analyzer, in-house coagulation testing, capnometry and pulse oximetry. The staff veterinarian will collaborate effectively with the entire hospital team to provide emergency services, inpatient and outpatient treatment, and general surgery and dentistry procedures to our target populations of at-risk dogs and cats. The staff veterinarian will also collaborate to provide coverage for the Animal Recovery Center (ARC) and the In House Veterinarian position as needed. Team members in this position are responsible for providing service and communication to clients, members of the public, co-workers, and patients that is consistent with our practice’s standards and Fear Free values. Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Managing Medical Cases (60%): Provide high quality, practical veterinary care to a wide range of emergency patients and inpatients; skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of outpatients and hospitalized animals within hospital medical parameters and budgetary guidelines General procedures, surgery and dentistry Provide a high level of customer service to external and internal clients Provide Medical Coverage for ARC and In House Veterinarian (25%): When working in ARC: primary case responsibility for ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Group animals (HLE and CIA) and animals admitted through NYPD, including veterinary forensic intake examinations (criminal cases) diagnostics, daily rounds, treatment plans and long term care, and euthanasia decisions. When working in the In House Veterinarian position: overseeing the admission of new patients from the ASPCA Adoption Center and their inpatient care, see CIA owned outpatients, oversee the care of CIA owned inpatients, and shared mentorship of the veterinary intern on the shelter medicine rotation. On Sundays the in-house veterinarian will SOAP all inpatients and communicate with their owners as appropriate in coordination with the interns on duty, and admit new patients from the Adoptions Center as needed.
