he Stratton VA Medical Center, part of VA Health Care Upstate New York, is located in the heart of Albany, New York. Located in the capital of New York State, this medical center serves veterans in a 100-mile radius. Opened in 1951, the medical center serves veterans in 22 counties of Upstate New York, Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

In 1990, this facility was named in honor of Samuel S. Stratton, U.S. Congressman of the 23rd District, a staunch supporter of veterans and a frequent visitor to the hospital. The medical center provides primary care, wellness and prevention outpatient care, and comprehensive primary, secondary and tertiary inpatient care in medicine, plus a full range of outpatient services. Veterans Benefit Counselors are available at this medical center, as well as a comfort home and hoptel for outpatients and their families. Our Voluntary Service office supports the delivery of veteran health services through volunteerism and donations from community and service organizations in the Albany area.

The Stratton VA Medical Center provides specialized medical services such as: cardiac catheterization, cardiac rehabilitation, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, stereotactic radiosurgery, hospice/palliative care, adult day health care, post-traumatic stress disorder, compensated work therapy, memory clinic, geriatric assessment, nursing home and respite care. In addition, we offer a Women Veterans Health Program that addresses a variety of health care needs specific to women veterans. Services include gynecology, bone density screening and on-site mammography. There is also extensive diagnostic laboratory medicine and radiology including computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.

The primary care program provides services at the medical center and at several community based outpatient clinics in: Glens Falls, Sidney, Elizabethtown, Schenectady, Troy, Kingston, Plattsburgh, Malone, Clifton Park, Fonda, and Catskill. These practices serve an integral role in the provision of expanded primary and preventive medical services.

The goal of the Stratton VA Medical Center is to provide the highest quality health care services through continuous quality improvement and technical excellence. The Stratton VA Medical Center has many internationally recognized scientists conducting medical research in areas of cancer, pneumonia, and post traumatic stress disorder.

The American College of Surgeons designated the Stratton VA as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Affiliated residency programs are fully integrated with Albany Medical College. Residents and medical students from Albany Medical College and other medical schools rotate through the medical center on a continuous basis. We also provide internships/fellowships for most health care disciplines, including: social work, nursing, public relations, and health care administration

DUTIES:
The section of General Internal Medicine at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center is recruiting for a full-time physician to be located in the Primary Care practice in the Albany NY and surrounding areas.Candidate must be a BE/BC general internist or family practitioner with outstanding clinical, and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities include outpatient clinic hours, Monday through Friday, no weekends/nights.

This position will work with a multidisciplinary team integrated with social worker, dietitian, clinical pharmacist, psychologist, and case managers.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship or have proper authorization to work in the United States; Candidates must have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine; Possess and maintain a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine from any State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia; Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine; Be proficient in written and spoken English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7405(f) Have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Leave and Holidays

  • Full-time physicians/dentists earn 26 days of paid annual (vacation/personal) leave each year and may accumulate up to 120 days. Annual leave begins to accrue immediately and can be used as it is earned (with supervisory approval).
  • Full-time physicians/dentists earn 13 days of sick leave each year with no limit on accumulation.
  • Part-time physicians/dentists earn a pro-rated amount of annual and sick leave based on their work schedule.
  • Military leave is authorized up to 15 days each year for active reservists and National Guard members.
  • There are 10 paid Federal holidays per year.
Health and Life Insurance

  • VA offers a variety of group health insurance plans with premiums partially paid by the Federal Government. You can change plans yearly. Employee contributions vary from plan to plan and are also determined based on work schedule (full-time vs. part-time).
  • Term life insurance with coverage based on salary is available with the cost shared by the Federal Government. Family and additional coverage options are available.
Liability Protection

  • VA physicians/dentists are covered under the Federal Tort Claims Act. The United States Government accepts responsibility and liability for the actions of its employees during the exercise of their official duties. VA physicians/dentists, therefore, are protected by the Federal Government in instances of alleged malpractice or negligence resulting form the performance of their duties in or for the Veterans Health Administration. Therefore, VA physicians/dentists are not required to carry personal malpractice insurance.
Retirement

  • Newly hired employees are covered by the Federal EmployeesÂ' Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tier retirement plan composed of Social Security benefits, FERS basic benefits, and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax-defer as much as 13 percent of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. The Federal Government also provides a basic contribution and matching, depending on the amount of the employee contribution.
Salary Information

  • Starting salaries and grades recommended by a Physician/Dentist Professional Standards Board based on professional education/training/experience.
  • Physicians/Dentists appointed at less than the 10th step of the grade are awarded increases within each grade based on demonstrated performance and may receive accelerated increases for outstanding performance or achievement.
